These sixteen ideas came from scrolling through hundreds of pins over a few long evenings. Most got skipped immediately because they needed a power drill or a trip to three different stores.
The ones that stayed are simple. They use things from the dollar store, the thrift shop or a bin you already have in the garage.
Every idea here works in a dorm, a rental or a room you’re just plain bored of. No permanent damage, no big budget required.
Some take an afternoon. Others take twenty minutes and a glue gun. Either way, your walls are about to get a lot more interesting.

CHEAP ROOM DECORATION IDEAS
Fairy Lights Behind Headboard
We’re starting off strong with the fairy lights behind a headboard. It’s one of those these that looks way more expensive than it actually is.
Tape a string of warm white lights in loose loops right behind the pillows. The soft glow makes even a plain bed frame could pass for a whole moment.
DIY Photo Wall Collage
How cute is a wall covered edge to edge in photos? This one costs almost nothing since you’re just printing pictures you already have.
Mix in a few ticket stubs or postcards between the photos. It breaks up the grid and makes the entire thing feel less staged.
Washi tape holds everything up without leaving marks, so renters are safe here too.
Thrifted Frame Gallery Wall
Thrifted frames never match. That’s exactly the point.
Grab a stack from the thrift store for a couple dollars each and spray paint them all one color for instant cohesion.

Mismatched sizes actually look better than a neat grid, so don’t stress about lining everything up perfectly.
Washi Tape Accent Wall
Not ready to commit to paint? Washi tape solves that problem completely.

Run strips diagonally across one wall in two or three colors for a graphic accent that peels right off later. It’s basically wallpaper with zero commitment, haha!
Dollar Store Vase Centerpiece
Who says a centerpiece needs to be fancy? A dollar store vase filled with dried grass or a few faux stems looks surprisingly put together.
Group three vases in different heights on a dresser or nightstand for a little more drama.
Mason Jar Wall Storage
Mason jars mounted on a board make the cutest little wall storage for brushes, pens or hair ties. Screw the lids to a scrap of wood, then twist the jars right on.
My drawer situation used to be a disaster until this fixed it, lol! Now everything has an actual spot.
No Sew Curtain Upgrade
Don’t own a sewing machine? No problem there! Hem tape and an iron get curtains looking custom in under an hour.
Fold the edge over, press the tape flat and you’re done. Nobody will ever guess you skipped the needle and thread.
Painted Wooden Crate Shelves
Wooden crates from the craft aisle turn into open shelving with just a coat of paint and a couple brackets. Stack them or hang them, either way they hold books, plants or picture frames just fine.

Sand the edges first so the paint goes on smooth. Rough crates look charming but splinters are not the vibe.
Repurposed Ladder Bookshelf
An old wooden ladder leaned against the wall makes a surprisingly great bookshelf. Rest books, folded blankets or magazines across each rung and you’ve got instant storage with zero shelving hardware.

Found one at a yard sale for five dollars once and it’s held up for years.
Faux Plants On Windowsill
Faux plants on a windowsill fake that lived-in, plant-person look without any watering schedule. Nobody has to know they’re not real, haha!
Mix a few different pot sizes so the row doesn’t look too uniform.
Cardboard Box Nightstand Hack
A sturdy cardboard box wrapped in fabric or contact paper works as a nightstand in a pinch. It sounds too simple to actually work but it holds a lamp and a book just fine.
Reinforce the corners with packing tape before wrapping it so it doesn’t cave under weight.
Ribbon Curtain Room Divider
Ribbon strung across a tension rod makes a soft, colorful room divider that costs almost nothing. Layer a few different widths and colors for a fuller curtain effect.
It sways a little every time someone walks by, which honestly adds to the charm.
Upcycled Tin Can Planters
Tin cans from the pantry become planters with a quick coat of paint and a drill hole for drainage. Group a few on a shelf for a little herb garden or succulent lineup.
The labels peel off easier if you soak the cans in warm water first.
Painted Rock Bookends Decor
Smooth rocks from the yard make surprisingly solid bookends once painted. Grab two similar sizes so your books actually stay upright, then paint a pattern or a single solid color on each.
This is the kind of project that costs literally nothing if you’ve got a yard nearby.
Scarf Draped Lamp Shade
A scarf draped over a plain lamp shade adds instant pattern and softens harsh light. Pick something lightweight so it doesn’t block too much brightness or get anywhere near the bulb.
An old scarf from the closet works better than buying something new for this one.
Pallet Wood Headboard Build
Last but definitely not least, we have the pallet wood headboard. A few boards from a pallet, sanded and stained, lean right against the wall behind the bed.

No drilling into the wall required. The wood grain gives all of the room a warm, rustic anchor point.
This is the one I’d copy first if I only had a weekend to spare!
