So I went digging through pin after pin looking for a workaround. Honestly there are more than you’d think.
Some use thrifted finds, some use cardboard, some skip glass altogether.
This list only kept the ideas that actually look good once they’re hanging on a real wall, not just staged in a perfect photo. Anything too fussy or expensive got dropped along the way.
Every idea here works on a everyday budget and most take an afternoon or less. A few need zero tools at all, which reads as cheating in the best way, haha!

CHEAP LARGE FRAME IDEAS
Thrifted Oversized Frame Display
Thrift stores are hiding oversized frames in plain sight, usually tucked behind a shelf of mismatched mirrors. The trick is picking one with a solid frame even if the art inside is questionable.

Swap out whatever painting came with it for something you actually love. Half the fun is not knowing what you’ll find until you’re standing there.
Cardboard DIY Large Frame
This one sounds ridiculous until you see it finished. Cardboard cut into wide strips, glued into a frame shape, then painted so it reads like real wood.

It weighs almost nothing, so hanging it is a breeze. Not exactly heirloom material, but it fools everyone at first glance, lol!
Spray Painted Frame Upgrade
Got an old frame in a finish you can’t stand? A few coats of spray paint fixes that fast.
Matte black turns almost anything modern. Gold works if you want it to look pulled from a boutique.
Tape off the inner edge first so the paint stays crisp along the corners.
Poster Board Faux Frame
This is the cheapest trick on this whole list, hands down. A wide poster board painted to could pass for a frame border, then your art sits right in the center.

It reads like a mat and frame combo from a distance. Nobody’s checking that closely, haha!
Large Frame Without Glass
Glass adds weight, cost and the occasional crack during shipping. Skipping it entirely solves all three problems at once.
This works especially well with fabric, canvas or anything textured that doesn’t need protection. It also makes the piece feel a little more relaxed and less formal.
IKEA Frame Hack Idea
The RIBBA line gets recommended constantly. It earned that reputation honestly.
Deep enough for canvas, cheap enough that you can grab two without flinching.
Swap the backing board for cork and suddenly it doubles as a bulletin board too.
Wood Trim Frame Border
Wood trim from the hardware store is criminally underused for this. Miter the corners, nail them together, done.
It looks custom-built even though the whole thing might cost twenty dollars in materials. Stain it dark or leave it raw depending on the room.
Oversized Frame Above Bed
An oversized frame above the bed fills that awkward gap headboards always leave. Go bigger than feels comfortable; it almost never looks too large in that spot.

Not every large frame needs art at all. A big mirror inside a chunky frame reads as decor and function in one move.
It also bounces light around a room that feels a little dark. Cheap mirror tiles glued to a backing board work if you want to skip buying a mirror outright.

Skip the glass if the paper has any texture or age to it.

Last but definitely not least, an empty frame propped against the wall with nothing inside it. It sounds strange until you try it.
Lean it against a mantel or a bookshelf and let the wall behind it become the art. Sometimes the frame is all of the point, no art required.
