Not sure which boots or jacket to pair with your sweater dress? If “how to wear sweater dress petite” is your starting question, there’s plenty to try here.
Think belted minis, simple ribbed dresses and longer styles with pointed shoes.
You can keep things simple or add a little color. These pictures also include separates and other dress styles, so not every look is a sweater dress.
Borrow the details you love, then check the hem and sleeve length on your own frame.
Sweater dresses and outfit details worth saving
green mini and black belt
We’re starting off strong with this dark green mini. I love the full sleeves and raised cable pattern.
The black belt looks so cute with the tall black boots.
Try placing your belt at your natural waist, then check where the hem sits. A petite-length version is worth considering if you want this above-the-knee look.
cream dress and flared cuffs
How cute are these flared cuffs? The cream ribbed dress has a slightly flared skirt too, with dark pointed boots underneath.
If you’re trying this shape, check the sleeves as well as the hem. You can keep the flared detail without choosing cuffs that cover most of your hands.
brown jacket and long dress
Don’t want to stick to minis? No problem! This tan dress falls below the knees, with a brown button-front jacket worn open over it.

The big gold-tone buckle is my favorite detail. Try a shorter jacket like this if you want your belt and most of the dress to stay visible.
black lapels and floral cuffs
I love the floral cuffs peeking out beneath these black sleeves. The broad lapels keep the rest of the visible outfit simple.
This is a close-up rather than a sweater-dress look, so it doesn’t show a hem or shoes. Save it for cuff inspiration, not as a full dress outfit to recreate.
flared cream mini
This cream mini may just be one of my favorites here. The fitted middle and flared skirt are so pretty with black tights and boots.
Keep the small black shoulder bag if you want to follow the same combination. There’s no need to add a belt when you already like the shape.
long cardigan and pale belt
If you love light neutrals, this one is for you. A long pale gray cardigan sits open over a ribbed dress, with a slim light belt at the waist.
I especially love the pointed pale shoes. Try the cardigan and dress together before deciding on length, rather than assuming both need to be short.
oversized cables and tall boots
I am obsessed with those oversized cuffs! The cream cable-patterned mini has a loose shape, with long matching scarf ends hanging down the front.
Black tights, pointed boots and a structured black bag finish the outfit. If you’d rather have less going on, try the dress without the scarf.
blue jacket and dark mini
The dark blue jacket and cream ribbed top are so cute together. This picture shows separates with a dark mini skirt, rather than a sweater dress.
For a dress variation, try a cream sweater mini under a similar zip-front jacket. That would be a new combination, not the outfit shown here.
taupe turtleneck and black accessories
Don’t want to go overboard with color? This taupe turtleneck, black boots and quilted black bag give you a simple pairing to save.
The seated pose hides the hem, so this picture doesn’t confirm a sweater dress. I’d borrow the colors for a taupe dress rather than guess at the hidden pieces.
button-front mini and lace-up boots
How cute is this black-and-white combination? A black sleeveless button-front mini goes over a white long-sleeve top.
Little white sock edges show above the lace-up boots.
This isn’t a clearly identifiable sweater dress, but the layering idea is worth keeping. Try a sleeveless sweater dress over a fitted long-sleeve top for your own version.
gray vest dress and tied scarf
This is such a pretty way to dress up a sleeveless sweater dress. The white collar shows above the gray neckline, with a patterned scarf tied at the front.
I love the tan buckle shoes with the brown handbag. You could leave off the scarf if you’d rather let the collar be the main detail.
vest dress and sneakers
Want something a little more casual? Try this taupe V-neck sweater dress over a white tee.
The brown sneakers and white socks keep the whole outfit simple.

A hem above the knees is one option to try if you like wearing your sweater dresses with flat shoes.
cream mini and long trench
I love this cream ribbed mini with the beige trench. The coat falls below the dress, with black tall boots and a black tote finishing the look.
Leave your coat open if you want the shorter dress to show. When trying a similar coat, check that the shoulders and sleeves fit the way you want.
red cardigan and bow shoes
The red cardigan is so pretty with those dark red bow shoes. A white top, black mini skirt and white socks make up the rest of this separates outfit.
There’s no sweater dress here. If you love the colors, try the cardigan over a black sweater mini as a separate styling experiment.
taupe dress and brown boots
If you are looking for something simple to put together, this one is for you. The taupe dress has a high neckline, turned-back cuffs and a straight shape.
Pair a similar dress with dark brown pointed boots. The little gold-tone necklaces are a lovely finishing touch without adding much else.
black vest and checked skirt
The gold-tone buttons and checked skirt are my favorite parts of this outfit. A black vest sits over a white tee, with white socks and chunky black loafers below.
This is another separates look, not a sweater dress. Keep it as vest-and-skirt inspiration if you’re choosing between a one-piece outfit and layers.
puffed sleeves and brown boots
This fitted beige dress is just so pretty. I love the puffed sleeves and the small pale bag with its chain strap.

The hem sits close to the tops of the brown boots. Try your dress with the actual boots you plan to wear, since that gap will depend on how both pieces fit you.
gray off-shoulder mini
Don’t want to add a jacket or a statement belt? No problem there!
This gray ribbed mini has a wide folded neckline that gives you a detail all on its own.
The small black bag and tall black boots keep the outfit simple. I’d leave the neckline uncovered like this when styling it for an indoor outing.
plaid scarf and brown boots
How gorgeous is this oversized plaid scarf? The red, green and white checks sit over a striped top and a short cream lower half, with brown boots underneath.

The scarf obscures the outfit enough that a one-piece sweater dress isn’t clear. For your own dress version, try this scarf with a plain cream mini.
patterned tights and red accents
Last but definitely not least, we have this dark mini with white patterned tights. I love the red shoulder bag and little heart pendant!
The picture doesn’t clearly establish a sweater-dress texture, but the accessories are worth saving. Try patterned tights and black Mary Janes with a simple sweater mini if you want a similar combination.
